Kundalini was made popular by the NewAge wave... it's both very attractive for its highly "exotic" and powerful effects, but is also very evasive.
Kundalini is a very big step in the typical Yoga formation. That is, you start with "stretches" and "postures" yoga, and then you go on to more "internal" and "energetic" styles. Kundalini is said to be felt as a wave of heat or ecstasy climbing up your spine, opening up all the pathways, chakras and minor energy centers along, and ending in enlightenment for the practictioner.
Back in the Woodstock age, people would try this on drugs, with a highly motivated and openminded mindstate, and would often succeed, but damage themselves in the process.
There are two way to get damaged by a premature Kundalini release:
- just like in electrical stuff, if the wires are not strong enough to take the juice, the relay/internal organs fry. That's bad because you'd need a very competent acupuncture therapist combined with months of traditional medicine treatments to get back into shape.
- the other, less promoted effects of a bad kundalini release, are the emotional imbalance resulting of a sudden major change in the chakra system. Understand that Chakras are not only energy centers... they are both light projectors, and light sensors. What it means, is that when your "social" chakra is overspinning, you tend to experience life in a very "social" way... ie, you need friendship, you need recognition, and every person you meet is seen in the light of "potential friend/not potential friend". Same goes with other chakras... money, sex, love... depending on the blend of colors YOU project from your chakras, reflecting your current state of mind, you get back an image matching that state of mind. So, depending on the global tone of color you are projecting, the same person could be seen as "potential friend, "potential lover", "potential money source", etc.
If the chakra system gets "shocked" by an bad kundalini release, your whole perspective on life/reality can shift, and thus many hippies ended up in asylums because they suddenly "lost it". And of course, doctors are quick to diagnose mental illnesses and prescribe medications.
What I want to point at with this damage thingy, is that it is important to realise that Kundalini will rise at IT sees fit, because your own body and mind knows how much it can take at its current level/state.
It is not to be rushed, or you'll end up either disappointed by the lack of progress, or damaged in some very rare occasions.
This said, Chakra Work is fine... just don't focus on kundalini, which is only one aspect of it. It would be like trying to launch the engine when the car has no wheels yet.
About kundalini itself.... some people say it is some pre-birth energy stored in your tail bone. Some people say it is simply Earth/telluric energy made available by the opening of the tailbone chakra/root chakra.
Kundalini Reiki goes along that line: it attunes you to the kundalini frequency, and makes it easier to align your system on it. I have come to think of kundalini reiki as the expression of the Earth primal energy THROUGH the human body.
Kundalini reiki doesn't replace a full yoga kundalini training, but it certainly helps a lot, AND can be used as a stand alone to boost up healings and stuff.
